Auto giant Ford has partnered with Agility Robotics to explore the use of a two-pedal robot to take parcels from roadside trucks and deliver them to the customer's door. Agility's Digit robots can lift packages weighing up to 40 pounds (18 kilograms), walk on uneven terrain and walk on obstacles, up and down stairs, and even stand upright when someone or something else hits it.

The Digit robot's arms and legs are tightly folded over the torso for storage in an unmanned delivery van. When arriving at the destination, the back door of the truck opens and the Digit robot unfolds itself, grabs a parcel and gets off the parcel and sends the parcel to the front door of the customer. The Digit robot is equipped with a lidar and a stereo camera, and can get a lot of mapping information to help it get from the delivery car to the customer's door.

If the Digit robot encounters an unexpected obstacle, it sends an SOS to the self-driving vehicle in order to find a navigation solution. If the self-driving vehicle cannot find a solution, it can send a help request itself, allowing the cloud service or manual to solve it. Ford said that the Digit robot is made of lightweight materials. Although no details are given, it means that the Digit robot can work all day. Agility Robotics plans to launch its Digit robot in the first quarter of 2020.
